POST 46
POSTED: SAT, MAY 4
(post 2 of 2 today)

I have distributed, through ANGEL, a brief set of comments on Portfolio 3 as well as listed your grades for each of the 3 portfolios and your participation credit. I averaged the scores and provided you the course grade in these emails as well. It will be probably mid-week before you can access the final grades online, but the ANGEL email tells you what I'll be posting. Thanks all. You've been great.

(PS: Read post 45 below, too!)

POST 45
POSTED: SATURDAY, MAY 4

All portfolios 2's have been returned with comments and grades through the ANGEL email function. Your grades are listed at the bottom of the rubric, which I inserted as the last page of your portfolio.

Kudos to you all--what a great batch of proposals. I hope to see some of these projects come to fruition. Your ideas are stellar.

I will send a quick email with a couple comments on Portfolio 3, but no line-by-line commentary. As you know, I expect those to earn you 100% (unless you missed something major or your grammar is atrocious). Watch ANGEL for these emails by mid-day Monday with a post here letting you know I've accomplished my grading of them.

I post final grades on Tuesday, May 7th in ZZUSIS by 5 pm (your time), but it may take a few days before they display.

Thanks, everyone, for a great semester in ENGL402.

Final weekly post!

Hi All---You have done an amazing job over these short 16 weeks.

All that's left is the third and final portfolio, Portfolio 3. This portfolio has two deliverables: The Progress Report and the Refleciton/Self-Assessment on writing this projgress report.

Portfolio 3 is due, emailed to me, May 3, 11:59 p.m. I always presume students will earn 100% on this project---if you follow the prompts on the assignment sheet and proofread your work carefully.

I have massive amounts of grading to do this week, but must post final grades by May 7th in ZZSUIS. As I stated last week, watch this page and watch your ANGEL email for comments, graded work, and responses. Most of that will happen this coming weekend.

Thanks everyone for taking my survey and providing feedback. The school has a teacher eval (located in ANGEL), and it would be fantastic if you could take a few minutes to give them a glimpse into your ENGL402 course with me this semester.

Congrats to everyone and best wishes in the future. Let me know if you have any questions this coming week. I have certainly enjoyed my semester with all of you.

Thank you,
Sue

ON GRADING

I will grade and comment upon Portfolio 2 like I did with Portfolio 1. I will offer suggestions for improvement as well as corrections. I must post grades in zzsuis by May 7th. I will return graded work through ANGEL and post to our course announcements page as I finish each project, but be patient--it's the end of the semester--all students in all courses are turning in multiple projects.

I will send an email with comments on portfolio 3, but will not make itemized line-by-line corrections. My belief is that most of you will earn 100% if you followed the assignment prompts.

Again, watch here for updates and watch ANGEL email for returned graded projects.

SURVEY UPDATE (Post 42, below)

Thank you guys so much for participating in the survey. I have fantastic comments and suggestions that I can use in future sections of this class. Your input is much appreciated.

If you've not taken the survey, it will remain open through May 7th. Please take a few minutes to share your experience.

Sue

Hi All,

I've created a short (5 question) survey with Survey Monkey to ask what specific tools your team used. EACH STUDENT IN 402 can/should (would you please) respond and take this uber-short questionnaire sometime this week? I'd be ever so grateful!

The Agenda for Week 15 (beginning April 22)

WEEK 15

Hi All:

Tomorrow, your big team project (PORTFOLIO 2) is due. Have you double checked and triple checked everything? Have you proofread? Have you made sure to model it after the samples in the book (deviating when necessary for your specific project)? Have you complete reports and thorough information for your audience(s)? Complete enough so that they can act on this project if they desire?

If the answers to these questions are "Yes," then send in your Portfolio 2 by 11:59 pm tomorrow.

If 2 extra days will help, I can offer a short extension---
j
ust send me an email that you'll be taking advantage of the extension, and send in the final finished Portfolio 2 by 11:59 pm on WEDNESDAY night.

I will send a "receipt" within 24 hours of receiving your project so that you know I've received it, and then you'll need to focus onPORTFOLIO 3 at that point.

PORTFOLIO 3 has two deliverables--the PROGRESS REPORT and the REFLECTION/SELF-ASSESSMENT (an assessment regarding working on a progress report). Pay attention to the specific assignment; these PROGRESS REPORTS are longer and more detailed than the weekly ones you've been working with. Make sure to meet the length requirements :)

Let me know if you have any questions. I will begin grading these second portfolios beginning later in the week, but will only promise that all work will be returned by May 7th, which is the day your final grades must be posted in zzsuis. I will return all graded work through ANGEL and post to our course announcements page as I do so. As always, I will make comments and suggestions for improvement on Portfolio 2.

Thanks!

HOW TO GET A JOB IN TECHNICAL WRITING

POST 39

YOUR WEEK 14 AGENDA (RIGHT HERE; NO DOWNLOAD)

Portfolio 2 is due one week from today. Teams should spend this week compiling and finalizing the 3 required documents: The Proposal, the RFP, and the Reflection/Self-Assessments.

Send your last weekly team progress report to me by 11:59 pm tonight outlining the things you will be doing this week on Portfolio 2. I have a few suggestions...

THINGS TO CHECK FOR:

"Person" --- often students write "sections" of these large projects and compile them near the deadline. Please proofread carefully to make sure that, since the documents are coming from a team of people, that they are written in the plural "we" and "us."

"Tone" --- please double check that you don't tell the Chancellor or other audience members that something they are doing "lacks" ... tell them instead that there is a "need" and why/how that need exists. Convey a positive tone (even when something is lacking!)

"Design" --- If your project is for WSU, consider using the WSU color scheme on your materials. "Branding" is very much a part of writing, and subtle things like color and font choice make readability more pleasurable---giving your project a better chance with your audience (whether it "should" or not, it does, so be mindful of design choices). Also, use plenty of white space. Make sure that sections have an extra "enter" or "space" between them. Use white space to help guide your audience.

"Grammar, punctuation, spelling" --- all count and count big. An audience will lose faith in even a great project if the verbiage in it contains errors. Use this last week to find proofreaders for your projects. See if you can find a friend or a classmate or your boss or your Mom and have them read over the project. Use your resources and contacts to help you put the final polish on these portfolios.

Email me if you have any concerns. I am so excited about your projects this semester. And, I'm pretty sure I will see some of them come to fruition in future semesters. Kudos to all!

Lastly, we're almost done! Just finishing up Portfolio 2 and writing theProgress Report and Self-Assessment for Portfolio 3 and then it's SUMMERTIME!

POST 37

(Post 2 of 2 today)

I have a favor/question to ask you guys.

I am aware that my materials for the course need improvement---in clarity and in organization both. So, I am asking both sections of 402 for suggestions to improve the assignment sheets and the website so that they become more user-friendly.

Would any of you have some suggestions for improved organization or how I could incorporate other visual cues such as tables, bullets, bolding, styles, etc. to make 402  a better experience for future students? To make these materials the best they can be, I could really use some feedback from my users' perspectives.

I understand that time is scarce, but if you could just share an idea or two with me (send me a quick note via email), I will compile these ideas and implement them during the semester break.

Thanks, in advance! I appreciate it!

Don't forget to check out today's first post (#36), below!

WEEKLY AGENDA FOR WEEK 13

This week in 402:

Your weekly progress report is due by 11:59 pm on April 8, emailed to me. Remember to GIVE DETAILS as to what has been done; what needs done; what went wrong; what went well. In progress reports, you share the DETAILS!

Some teams have started talking about their DESIGN and BRANDING of these documents and begun writing their drafts. Are you close to drafting? The portfolio is due in only 2 weeks! Is there someone on or outside your team you can ask to review for you once you have a full draft? Careful proofreading and final editing are esseential.

One of the most often overlooked issues is in "person." Many of these portfolios come to me with a mixture of "I" and "we" in them. You can avoide this is you proofread carefully and use "we" (as you are a team and several students working together). "We" is the most appropriate person.

INTRODUCING PORTFOLIO 3
Also--allow me to formally introduce PORTFOLIO 3. This portfolio is a solo project in which you reflect on your entire semester in ENGL402. There are 2 documents in PORTFOLIO 3: The Progress Report and the Reflection/Self-assessment (on writing a Progress Report). Your textbook will guide you through these.

These are due, emailed to me as a pdf, no later than 11:59 pm on May 3. That's a 2-week turnaround after submitting Portfoio 2.

And, with that, our semester together will be over. These 16 weeks really fly by when you think about it!

Let me know if you have any questions this week!

POST 34

POSTED: WED, APRIL 3

I wanted to share with everyone one of the BEST weekly progress reports I've received. It details the "little things" as well as the big picture. Several of the teams are doing this, however, several other teams are sending only a couple of sentences. The better the progress report, the more on-track your team will stay. I'm sure of this!

STELLAR EXAMPLE 1

Another team, at the bottom of their report, lists "QUESTIONS FOR THE PROFESSOR" -- which is a fantastic way to get audience awareness (my awareness!). It's easy for me to see; I don't miss anything. It's not required, but it is valuable nonetheless.

Thanks everyone for the updates and for your dedication to these twelve amazing projects.

CAMPUS SIGNAGE
CAMPUS STUDY SPACES
GUN SAFETY
NEW CAMPUS WALKWAY
CAMPUS LOCKERS
TRADER JOES
ZZUSIS NAVIGATION
CAMPUS WIRELESS SIGNAL BOOSTERS
INCREASING RECYCLING PROGRAM AWARENESS
CAMPUS PRESENTATION TRAINING ROOM (PTR)
HUMANE SOCIETY FUNDING
COUGARS CARE

It's a FANTASTIC bunch of projects--some on campus; some in the larger community. And, all very worthy. You guys are kickin' butt.

HAVING TROUBLE MEETING/COMMUNICATING?
This is an online-only course, and we cannot expect to "meet" -- not face-to-face anyway. Some teams are communicating on Facebook. Others via email. If you are having any trouble "meeting," one team is using Google Hangout with great success so far. It allows people to be at the location of their choice, but brings them together in a virtual meeting space. It's also free. :)

THE FIRST PROGRESS REPORT IS DUE ON MARCH 25.

The basic Memo Template that you used to propose your project can work for these weekly reports very nicely. Also, remember to reach Ch 20 and 21 for Dobrin might have other formats that could work as well.

Thanks.

Happy St. Paddy's Day!

WEEK 10 BEGINS...

I returned the professional document portfolios on Wednesday during Spring Break. I trust you have them in-hand and can see what steps you need to take for the next revisions. Great start, peeps, but as with most writing, some more can be done to make these documents even better. Also--they're never done. I will always find a phrase or a word or even a comma that needs my attention every time I apply for a new position. Keep a critical eye on these documents; nourish them (update them every chance you get), "grow" them. They are "living" documents and need you to tend them.

OK--Week 10 (I don't know about you, but I want another week of Spring Break!).

WEEK 10 AGENDA. <--linked here.

You already know what you have in front of you as far as this second portfolio, but I have a couple of memo items for you as you press onward. Check your WEEK 10 AGENDAS for the details now!

Hey All!

What great projects you've proposed! I am so looking forward to reading all of them! In getting feedback to you as quick as I could, I had to stop grading the first portfolios.

I made an executive decision that you needed this feedback now and that the portfolio 1 could wait yet a few more days. That said, I'm back on them. I'm done with 22 of 45 of them--so half way through. I won't return until they are all finished, but I didn't want you wondering where they were or if the internet had somehow lost yours. I do apologize for this latest delay, but again, I felt the precedence was with Porfolio II and the 1-page proposals.

Bear with me. I have not forgotten!

Happy Spring Break!

FOLLOW-UP PORTFOLIO 1

TWO THINGS...

1) I was just doing a little reading about how to follow up on our job app materials. I found a great little article on USNews.com and wanted to share. There are some "rules" about what to do once we've submitted our materials.

Check it out...

"How to follow up on your job applicaton"

2) I am not done yet w/ the grading of these portfolios. Although today and tomorrow are dedicated to them, it could be Monday before I get them returned. I will return them in ANGEL and then post here that they are ready.

Remember, no agenda on Monday because you are on spring break :) Hope you're doing something fun!

Remember to turn in your Portfolio 2 1-page proposal (template here) before Monday, and let me know if you'd like my help working through your project ideas.

IMPORTANT!
NOTICE!
REMEMBER! Portfolio 1 has 4 components.

JOB AD ANALYSIS
RESUME
COVER LETTER
PROJECT ASSESSMENT (reflection)

Some portfolios are arriving without this vital 4th part! Double check your work now!

(PASTED FROM THE PORTFOLIO 1
ASSIGNMENT SHEET
)

4. Project assessment (reflection)
- your 500-word project assessment document should answer most of the following questions, each of which is tied to the major goals of the assignment:

THINK ABOUT / USE / APPLY 402's 5 CORE CONCEPTS:

Rhetorical analysis – How did the particular job you applied for affect how you wrote your letter? Did it change or affect how you presented yourself? How did applying for this position help you understand aspects of your experience you might need to develop more?

Document design – What is the most effective aspect of your deliverables in terms of presentation or design? Have you deliberately adapted a standard form in an unusual or creative way? If so, why?

Editing for clarity and conciseness – What was the most challenging document to produce and why? Briefly describe and explain one of the significant revisions you made to this document after your initial draft.

Genres of workplace writing – What genres for each deliverable did you select? Why?

Workplace practices and collaboration – How well did you plan your work on this project? What might you have done differently? What was one way that peer feedback helped you improve your work? How did responding to the work of others help you improve your own work?

A NOTE ON THE INTERVIEW DISCUSSION BOARD IN ANGEL:

I realize I didn't provide any framework for your responses in the discussion board regarding interview questions. This answer may be vague as well. The responses may be simply a nod of agreement (Hey! I never thought of this!...). They may be a question (Great post! Where/how could I do this?). Or, something like ...  I, too, have been asked that. Here's what happened...

The possibilities are endless. Perhaps there is a site (URL) you want to share with a classmate--a place to get more info about the inevitable interview.

I was hoping to promote a full class discussion. My thought was maybe I could simulate what this might be like if we could all sit in the same class at the same time and discuss "interviewing." --It may or may not end up working like that, though. But, that was my intent.

JOB AD ANALYSIS Q & A:

Some of you are wondering about the length and format for the job ad analysis document.

The analysis should be "as long as it needs to be" --- and I don't mean that to be smart alec-ky. What most students do is to use a different font for their answers (or a different color) and type into that document.

Many answers are 1 word (keywords) or a list of words. Some are 1-line. A few take a paragraph. It's up to you to determine the length of each answer based on each question.

I hope this helps. I realize I don't really give an iron-clad answer though. Email me and let me know if you have any further questions!
