I expect you to read your book! It's crucial to the success of your portfolios.

I expect you to take the online quizzes for each chapter. They too will help you wrestle with and grasp this information.

I expect you to participate in the discussion boards in ANGEL.

I expect you to turn in your 3 portfolios and have an integral part in writing the Portfolio 2 Progress Reports.

Do the online quizzes for chapters 1 and 2, 13, 14.
Do these for YOUR LEARNING. You DO NOT turn them into me!

WEEK 2 AGENDA

JAN 14 3 & 4 Read: chapters 3 AND 4 of your text
Do: online quizzes for chapters 3 and 4. Do these for your learning. You DO NOT turn them into me.

By the end of week 2, I will have used ANGEL to build "teams." These teams will usually consist of 5 members from this course, though some will only have 4. ANGEL decides on the teams, I do not. I use a random generator. These teams will be a CRUCIAL part of your learning and doing experience in 402 and will be integral to sucessful Portfolios 1 and 2.

WEEK 3 AGENDA

JAN 21

5 & 6

Read: chapters 5 and 6 of your text (pp. 100-167)

Do the online quizzes for your own benefit.

TASKS THIS WEEK:
BUILD TEAM RAPPORT IN ANGEL
Establish with your teammates how you wish to communicate and your availablity. DISCUSS: preferred modes of contact and availability. Give your email address, facebook, face-to-face, by phone, and/or IM name preferences. Give teammates your available days and times. Begin to figure out "where" and how you're going to work. Your collaboration this semester DOES NOT all have to be done in ANGEL!

GOOGLE DOCS
Have you worked before in GoogleDocs? This is a GREAT place to collaborate on writing. You might consider giving it a try for the portfolios in this course and for your team correspondence. It won't work for everyone, but its a FANTASTIC tool that really helps writers write together.

DROPBOX
Dropbox gives you access to share a folder of materials. It might work better than ANGEL. Please consider it for Portfolio II even if you decide against it for Portfolio 1.

week 5 agenda

FEB 4 9 & 10 Read: chapter 9 and chapter 10 (pp. 238-305)

PEER REVIEW PORTFOLIO 1 BEGINS TODAY

  1. WATCH: NO ONE WRITES ALONE
  2. Post drafts of your JOB AD ANALYSIS, COVER LETTER, AND RESUME
to the team discussion board—or in a mutually-agreed upon other location--NOT LATER THAN MIDNIGHT FEB 4
  3. Begin reviewing each other’s documents. NOTE: I recommend completing and returning your reviews BY MIDNIGHT, FEB 10 (as that could give each team enough time to review for peers a second time before the packets are due to me).
  4. REVIEW & REVISE YOUR OWN DOCUMENTS FEB 10-23
  5. WRITE YOUR REFLECTIONS/ASSESSMENTS—I’ve had a number of students forget to do these. Don’t forget! This is a vital part of your portfolios!
  6. SCHEDULING CHANGES FROM THE ABOVE MUST BE ARRANGED & AGREED UPON WITH YOUR TEAM MEMBERS! Will you each get 4 reviews? Or will you work in teams of 2? Will you do a round-robin review? The more reviews, the better. BUT, YOUR TEAM MUST DECIDE!
  7. You are in teams of 5 and -- just like the work world -- you may or may not enjoy each other’s company or be friends. But, you are teammates with a task to do and you can divvy up the work in fair and smart ways. It's up to each team to determine how to work this. Email me if you're having difficulties or have any questions.
Your team participation is 30% of your course grade and is also CRUCIAL to success on your first 2 portfolios.

TASKS:

YOU'LL NEED TO MEET AS A TEAM (via phone, or virtually--whatever works for YOUR TEAM. You cannot expect to meet face-to-face since this is an online course!. If you all can, great, but otherwise, you need to brainstorm how to communicate). Communication is KEY to a successful portfolio 2.

BRAINSTORM SOME IDEAS FOR A NEED IN YOUR COMMUNITY(S), PICK ONE IDEA, AND WRITE YOUR PROPOSAL and then an RFP.

These are complicated genres and require a lot of research. think about how to BEST divvy up the workload. Read the Assignment.

Read. The. Assignment.

Decide who does which tasks and how you'll bring all of the separate work together as a finished portfolio.

Your team can write 1 reflection/assessment, but please feel free to submit separate reflective statements. Please inform me as to which approach your team will take.

NOTE:
CC YOUR WHOLE TEAM on any emails to me. This way everyone knows everything that's going on. If you write to me, include the team (unless, of course, its of a personal nature :)
