WHAT DOES YANCEY WANT?

GOALS & DELIVERABLES:
This short module asks you to produce a "short response paper" to "Composition in a New Key" by Kathleen Blake Yancey. Yancey first gave this speech in 2005 for the national convention of college composition instructors. Then it was "remixed" into this print article.

Having just read COMPOSITION IN A NEW KEY by Kathleen Blake Yancey, answer the following questions:

  1. Who is her audience? Is there more than one? Who are they?
  2. Does the "article" (once a speech) have a chance of reaching its audience(s)? Why or why not?
  3. What do you think Yancey's PURPOSE is? That is, what does she want from you and your peers?
  4. You will formulate your own responses to the prompts above, into a short response paper.

Do NOT summarize Yancey, rather RESPOND to her and to my prompts. If you have an observation or idea not in the prompts, please feel free to address that as well.

But, what is a response paper?
